Common Cucumber Diseases: Symptoms and Prevention

AI scanner, farming assistant and agro marketplace in one app.
Cucumbers often get sick in gardens and greenhouses, especially in humid weather or poorly ventilated conditions. Spotting a disease early can mean saving your harvest. Below are the most common cucumber diseases and their main symptoms.
Powdery mildew
- Symptoms: a white, flour-like coating on leaves, mostly on the upper side. Later the leaf turns yellow and dries out.
- What favors it: warm weather, high air humidity and dense, shaded plantings. It can develop even on dry leaves.

Downy mildew
- Symptoms: yellow, angular spots on the upper side of the leaf, limited by the veins. In humid weather a grayish-purple fuzzy growth appears on the underside.
- What favors it: humidity, long periods of leaf wetness and poor ventilation in greenhouses. It spreads quickly.
- How it differs from powdery mildew: powdery mildew is a white coating on top of the leaf, while downy mildew shows yellow spots with growth on the underside.
Gray mold
- Symptoms: a gray, fuzzy mold on fruit, flowers and stems; the affected area softens and rots.
- What favors it: cool, humid weather and poor ventilation. Infection often starts from old flowers or wounds.
Bacterial wilt
- Symptoms: leaves and stems wilt suddenly even though the soil is moist. When a cut stem is touched and pulled away, a sticky, stringy fluid may stretch out.
- How it spreads: cucumber beetles commonly carry it.
- What to do: there is no cure. Remove and destroy infected plants, and control the beetles early.
Root and stem rot (Fusarium)
- Symptoms: the plant yellows and wilts, the base of the stem turns brown and the roots rot.
- What favors it: overwatering, poor drainage and infection built up in the soil.
Cucumber mosaic virus
- Symptoms: light and dark green mottling on leaves, distorted foliage, stunted growth and deformed fruit.
- How it spreads: aphids carry the virus.
- What to do: the virus cannot be cured. Remove infected plants and control aphids.
Prevention
- Choose varieties resistant to common diseases.
- Keep air circulating: leave enough space between plants and ventilate greenhouses regularly.
- Water at the base in the morning, without wetting the leaves.
- Rotate crops: avoid growing cucumbers and other cucurbits in the same spot for several years in a row.
- Remove and destroy infected leaves and plants promptly. Do not compost them.
- Control aphids and beetles, since they spread disease.
- When treating with products, check the label for dosage, spray interval and the waiting period before harvest.
